Temple Announcement

On October 1, 2023, President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to construct the Ulaanbaatar Mongolia Temple at the October 2023 General Conference. Landlocked between China and Russia in East Asia, Ulaanbaatar, with a population of 1.7 million people, is known as the coldest capital city in the world. The Church of Jesus Christ has seen rapid growth in Mongolia since missionaries arrived in 1992. The first mission of the Church was established in 1995. The country has more than 12,000 Latter-day Saints in approximately 25 congregations. This will be the first temple in the country. Presently, the closest temple is located in Hong Kong, more than 1,800 miles away.1

Temple History

In the 30th anniversary year of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Mongolia, some 700 members and friends gathered in Ulaanbaatar for a family-focused devotional with Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. His visit to Mongolia was part of a ministry tour to the Asia North Area in September 2023.

In his remarks, Elder Andersen said that the members in Mongolia are pioneers of the gospel. "Don’t be afraid to tell your friends, 'I believe in Jesus Christ,' he said. "When you do, you will feel His love and acceptance." He encouraged the Latter-day Saints that the Church would continue to grow as they keep the commandments, pay tithing, and share the gospel.

He asked the Saints to prepare themselves for the House of the Lord, saying that someday soon a temple would be constructed in Mongolia.2
