Payson Utah Temple |
Planning phase; groundbreaking pending (awaiting announcement) |
At a Payson City Council Budget Retreat held January 29–30, 2010, City Manager Rich Nelson noted that—in light of the temple announcement—he had asked the golf pro at Gladstan Golf Course to investigate the possibility of a public/private partnership for operating wedding receptions at the golf course. Street Superintendent Kent Fowden also pointed out that the road to the temple will be a large budget item that needs to be addressed.1
The Payson Utah Temple will be located in southwestern Payson on a gently sloping parcel near the intersection of 930 West and 1550 South, adjacent to a recently constructed meetinghouse in the Payson Utah Mount Nebo Stake. The site offers scenic mountain views and a convenient location, just a mile from the 800 South exit of I-15.
Approximately 78,000 members from 22 stakes located between Spanish Fork and Nephi will belong to the new Payson Utah Temple District.
On January 25, 2010, President Thomas S. Monson announced plans for the construction of a new temple in Payson, Utah. He said, "Temples answer those soul-searching questions of the purpose of life, of why we are here and where we are going. They are sanctuaries from the storms of life and bless the lives of members of the Church who worship within their sacred walls." The new temple will serve the growing membership in southern Utah County and help alleviate demands on the heavily attended Provo Utah Temple. This announcement brings the total number of operating and planned temples in Utah to 15.2
The Payson Utah Temple will be the fifteenth temple built in Utah and the third temple built in Utah County, following the Provo Utah Temple (1972) and the Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple (1996).
