Fort Lauderdale Florida Temple |
Awaiting site announcement; groundbreaking pending (awaiting announcement) |
Elder M. Anthony Burns, an Area Seventy in the North America Southeast Area, has indicated that the desired site for the Fort Lauderdale Florida Temple is located in western Broward County and not in Fort Lauderdale proper. An official announcement from Church Headquarters is expected at a later date. Fred Bethel, bishop of the Fort Lauderdale Ward, summarized his feelings on the announcement by saying, "I am excited. We've worked really hard these past few years to grow the congregation. It is a great blessing."1 Unofficial reports place the temple on the western side of Davie.2
On October 3, 2009, President Thomas S. Monson announced that Florida's second temple would be built in Fort Lauderdale, located in southeastern Florida. The new temple will serve members living in South Florida and the Bahamas. Members in this region currently travel to the Orlando Florida Temple to participate in the Church's highest ordinances.3
The Fort Lauderdale Florida Temple will be the second temple built in Florida, following the Orlando Florida Temple (1994).
